Angers Castle and the Apocalypse Tapestry

Angers Castle, a majestic structure nestled in the heart of the city of Angers, on the banks of the River Maine, stands as a testament to medieval architecture. A true symbol of the power of the Dukes of Anjou, this impressive fortress, with its schist and limestone towers, invites visitors on a journey through time. As you explore its rich history, its lush gardens and its artistic treasures, such as the famous Apocalypse Tapestry, this castle offers an unforgettable experience on the doorstep of the Loire Valley. The Château des Forges hotel, a charming and exceptional estate in Angers, invites you to visit this unmissable site in western France.

From the Gauls to the present day: the history of Angers Castle

From the time of the Gauls and Romans, the site of Angers Castle was a strategic location, but it was in the 9th century that the castle’s history truly began, with the construction of its first fortress. Transformed and extended over the centuries, notably under Louis IX and Duke René of Anjou, the castle became an imposing stronghold and a princely residence. Following René of Anjou’s departure, the castle weathered the Wars of Religion before being converted into a prison, which held, amongst others, Nicolas Fouquet, minister to Louis XIV. The prisoners left their mark on the building with inscriptions and drawings carved into the stone. In 1875, Angers Castle was listed as a Historic Monument. Today, it stands as a living testament to French history, reflecting the splendour and turmoil of several centuries.

Ramparts that inspire wonder

The ramparts of Angers Castle offer an exceptional view of the town and the landscapes of the Maine Valley. As they walk along the ramparts, visitors can admire the architectural splendour of the fortress, as well as the natural beauty that surrounds it. This unique vantage point allows visitors to understand the site’s strategic importance throughout the ages and to appreciate the tranquillity of the nearby River Loire, which contrasts with the imposing walls of the castle.

Gardens perfect for a leisurely stroll

The gardens of Angers Castle are an exceptional place where time seems to stand still. Designed as spaces for contemplation and relaxation, they invite you to stroll amongst a variety of plants, trees and flowers. These gardens, which reflect the elegance and grandeur of the Court of Anjou in the time of Duke René, also provide the ideal setting from which to admire the imposing fortifications and the royal residence, creating a perfect harmony between nature and architecture.

A work of art from another century: the Apocalypse Tapestry

The Apocalypse Tapestry, housed at Angers Castle, is a masterpiece of medieval art. This monumental work, commissioned by Louis I of Anjou in the 14th century, depicts the visions of Saint John with extraordinary expressive power. Stretching over an impressive length, the apocalyptic scenes unfold one after another, captivating visitors with their detail and emotional intensity. The gallery housing it offers an immersive experience of this sumptuous textile narrative.
