The Galerie David d’Angers: A 13th-century abbey turned museum

The museum occupies the former Toussaint Abbey, built in the 13th century by Augustinian canons and later left as a romantic ruin following the French Revolution.

In 1984, architect Pierre Prunet restored the building, replacing the collapsed vault with a massive glass roof that floods the space with natural light. François Mitterrand inaugurated the gallery in May of that same year.

Good to know: admission is free every day from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as for visitors under 26.

Pierre-Jean David d’Angers: A committed 19th-century sculptor

Born in Angers in 1788, Pierre-Jean David, known as David d’Angers, won the Prix de Rome in 1811 before becoming one of the most sought-after sculptors of the 19th century.

A staunch republican, he created around forty monumental sculptures for cities across France and Europe, including the pediment of the Panthéon and statues of Gutenberg and Jean Bart.

The gallery also houses a portion of its 550 bronze medallions and 4,000 drawings.

"We recommend that our guests visit the gallery late in the day to take advantage of free admission from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. before returning to the château for dinner," says the team at Château des Forges.
